Wish I could say I've seen these strange sights and ghostly events.Somewhere in a Rochdale church there is a ghostly white Baum rabbit which hops around the churchyard.
The Eagle and Child legend sprang up because of a need to explain away an unexpected birth by placing the new born under the nest of an eagle or so I've heard- a very unlikely story. Then again maybe people were easily convinced in those days.

I'm fascinated by these tales of secret passages particularly the one between the Parish Church andthe Eagle and Child. I wonder if the vicar staggers along it sometimes. I 've not seen a boggart , my mum always told me as a child to get to sleep or else 'boggart 'll get you.
Used to lie awake wondering what the heck a boggart was.
The significant owl hoots in the night.
the eagle and child was featured on a ghost programme last year on channel 5.the land lady says that the programme makers are doing a follow up which will be on channel 5 soon.
i will try and find out more and keep you all posted
any way keep watching them skys cos you never know what you might see

Yes there are tunnel's under Leyland, either that or my son has a good imagination!! he found a doorway under the stage of Balshaw's which lead him into the tunnel's, him and a friend ended up at St Andrew's he also said there were other passages off and possible some going toward's Dawson lane, that could be going off in the direction of the old Worden Hall I think.

Hi, I remember being told of the tunnels running from Balshaws but never saw any evidence of them. Having said that I don't think I would of had the courage to wander through them. I wonder what they where used for?

Wish we'd known about these tunnels at Balshaw's then we wouldn't have needed to creep past Victor's window.
The fear of being caught was so exhilerating. Then Balshaws was an old building too and no doubt on the escape route. Was there some connection with the Hocking family there!
Would love to see the film on The Eagle and Child. Will keep buying the lottery tickets. No doubt bar takings soared because of the ghosts in these pubs.

I've only just discovered this gem of a thread! Underground tunnels? What an interesting town Leyland is! I really ought to travel those 2 junctions up the M6 and see for myself!
I tend to be sceptical as regards ghosts, UFO's etc., but so many people have had weird experiences.... must be something in it. There are lots of spooky tales from this neck of the woods too. The local pub is supposedly haunted and just a mile over the hill is the cottage of a 17th century witch. She lived with her granddaughter, who had a white rabbit as a pet. They were attacked by two men, who killed the rabbit as a familiar, so the witch cursed them. Now if anyone catches sight of a ghostly white rabbit in the fields, they're in for bad luck. Just after we moved here, a window cleaner saw the white rabbit and the next day fell off his ladders and broke several bones - it made the local press! Ever since, when I drive down the lanes by that cottage, I keep my eyes firmly on the road in case that rabbit is in the field!!
Anyone interested in UFO's might want to visit the UFO & Alien exhibition in Blackpool. The man who runs it is well over the top (don't ask questions or you're in for a lecture!! ) and some of the exhibits are a bit cheesy, but there's some very interesting stuff there too - lots of mind, body, spirit features.

Talking about "boggarts" - does anyone else remember that the path that led across the fields from Back Lane, by Swindlehurst's farm, to somewhere near Pack Saddle Bridge was known as "Boggart's Clough"?

You do have to watch them bogartswith their long pointy ears. They are everywhere, supposedly the spirits of juvenile deliquents. That's why they throw things around and have tantrums.
Some areas evidently'swaarmt wi 'em' and they have their established spots.
Found this gem about the Clayton Hall boggart and the saying about a too frequent caller to a house.'Heer Aw coom agen like t'Clayton Ho' Boggart'
Hope someone can enlarge on the Back Lane bogarts and the Clough.
Can't remember what a clough is but it is a well known Lanky surname.
