Jim; I think you're correct about Malcolm Newlands coming before George Thompson. Fred Else was in there somewhere too ?? Thompson was the goalie that was in collision with Derek Dooley v Sheff. Wednesday at Deepdale that led to Dooley losing his leg...1954, North End went to the Cup Final that year and lost to WBA. Jimmy Gooch, born Ilford 1921, transferred to Bradford, July 1953.
Good luck to North End tonight. A win tonight would be a massive incentive.
Last summer when I was in Preston, I bought the North End book 'Derby Days' which covers many of the 'derby' games over the years, and names the player lineup. I've just gone through the games and it seems that Newlands was the reserve goalie behind Gooch.
Post war it was Fairbrother, '46-'47... Gooch, W.Hall, Newlands, mostly Gooch '47-'53... Thompson, '53-'56... Else, '56-'61 with an occasional Barton and Lynne... there's a three year gap then it's... Kelly, '64-'73 with Barton again, and J. Brown on occasion... then there is another break until... Tunks, '78-'79... Litchfield, '81-'84... Brown, '86-'88... Farnworth, Johnstone, '91-'93... Richardson, '94... Mimms, '96... O'Hanlon, '97... Moilanen, '97-'98...and ending with... Lucas, '98-01

I was in the football museum last night and made a point of looking for Gooch.
Signed 1938, left 1947. He looked a bit like George Formby on his photo.
Great atmosphere last night, lousy FIFA referee as usual, denied a blatant hands ball in the penalty area, TV shows it clearly , and most of the decisions went agains PNE. An outstanding game from 19 years old David Nugent. How long will we hold on to him.!
Noel; If Gooch, according to your post, signed 1938, left 1947, then I'd like to know why he is named in the North End team v Blackpool, Saturday, 10th September 1951 ? And why does the Bradford City team page say they signed him from PNE in 1953 ?? Perhaps you being only middle aged, in good health, dashingly handsome good looks and own teeth, and with a full head of hair, perhaps you're too young to absorb the North End history ;-)) ??
Four of us drove in the pouring rain the 30 miles to Pasadena, where a pub was advertizing the North End v Ipswich game yesterday. and I agree with you, once again the English refereeing was atrocious. I have hardly seen a game this season where the referee hasn't had a 'hand' in the result. I'm beginning to think that they have gone the way of the German refs, and are being bribed !!

Did I write 1947? Silly me, July 1953 he left to join the Bantams, and only stayed with them for a year. By the way you missed out the dashingly handsome good looks and own teeth.
You went 30 miles to watch a match on TV? Wow. There again the average Man Ure supporter travels a lot further than that to their home matches. <:-)--
Noel; I said you were all of those things. Take another look [} ] [ ]

David, Your list of goalkeepers stirred a pleasant distant memory. Mick Lynn was my best mate, we sat next to each other at school and only lost touch when PNE transfered him.
Jim
I'm up at 5:00am to watch the Burnley v Blackburn cup tie on live TV. Hope it's as good as the Everton v Man Utd match. I had to pay for that one $15.95. Worth every penny.
BTW; I just watched the local news, we have had relentless heavy rain for about three days and more coming down. We have flood warnings until Tuesday at 6:00pm. And they annonced that Sydney Poitier is 81 today. Makes you feel old eh ?

Another 3 points at a packed Deepdale. 18,200 but romm for a few more, certainly where I was in the Pavilion.
The game hinged on a penalty decision by referee . Eddie Lewis the PNE left winger took the ball into the penalty area right by the goal line, and shadowed by Roach the Burnley left back pushed the ball round him , went the other way to collect it and was pushed over for a penalty.
The Burnley fans sitting 100 yards away were adamant it wasn't a penalty.
Me sitting 5 yards from it had a clear view and no doubt about it a clear cut penalty. Alexander hammered the ball home from the spot.
Follow this link for some photos of the game , the 5th and 6th photos show a clear foul forthe penalty. It goes to show that Burnley fans are bad losers, they said the referees decision was "a bit fishy". ( Roach, fishy, get it?, oh suit yourselves.)[8D]
